Irish Rural Link has welcomed the new Programme for Government launched early this week. The Programme sets out ambitious goals for the Fine Gael – Labour coalition for the term 2011 – 2016, many of which relate to rural issues. Among the promises are improvements to rural broadband and rural transport, a fuel poverty strategy, social inclusion and anti-poverty measures, a universal postal service and supports for SMEs. The programme promises to support co-operatives for the delivery of services and renewable energy production and to recognise the role of credit unions. Seamus Boland, CEO of Irish Rural Link said that IRL will also continue to call for fresh proposals on rural development. Over the coming weeks, IRL will be seeking to impress upon the Taoiseach, Ministers and TDs the absolute importance of revitalising rural communities and economies as part of a fair national recovery process. Helen Dunne, Policy and Communications Officer with IRL welcomed the Programme stating that many of the measures called for in their “Rural Manifesto” have been recognised. She stated that there is a lot of work still to be done on promoting rural development and addressing the burden of the carbon tax for rural households. Improved efficiencies in public services in health services, education and local government services, road maintenance together with job creation can also play a part in improving the overall quality of life for rural communities. -Ends- |
