Community Services Projects are local projects delivering vital services and employment opportunities nationwide. Part of the motivation behind hosting this celebration day is to highlight the devastating effects from the disproportionate cuts made to the sector in last year’s Budget. Many in the sector feel that it would be a worthwhile exercise to host a celebration day to showcase the work of the different groups. A celebration day will potentially recognise the great work community services projects do whilst demonstrating the importance of continuing the practical and much needed services local projects provide. Without doubt Community Services Projects have played a very important role of improving the quality of life for local communities. Upwards of 420 projects nationwide employ in excess of 2700 people who were previously long term unemployed. Delivering a wide range of essential services, the diversity of projects has to be noted and is mirrored in the work being done on the ground. Examples include meals on wheels, home insulation, visitation and security for the elderly and housebound, gardening and household assistance, services and sports provision for people with disabilities, environmental and landscaping services, enterprise training, mediation services and a variety of other centre based activities. Crucial to the success of projects is the assistance received under the Community Services Programme. |
